An Unknown God
Marilyn Appleby
One of our readings today is from Acts 17 and describes how Paul, as he strolled through he streets of Athens, noticed an altar to ‘AN UNKNOWN GOD’. If you Google this, you will invariably be faced with an image similar to the one here. However, there is no proof that this is the actual altar, but, upon discovering it, Paul addresses the members of the Areopagus by sharing his thoughts about the ‘Unknown God’.
Paul (Previously Saul), was someone who once persecuted anyone who was of ‘The Way’, (followers of Jesus), but then after a life-changing experience on the road to Damascus, became a passionate advocate for Christianity. Paul, was a great spokesman and managed to explain, using very few words, who this Unknown God was and his plan from the time of Creation to theresurrection and the time of Judgement.
If we were challenged to tell someone all about the God we worship I wonder if we could do so in such a concise and meaningful way? Something to consider perhaps!
For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the
man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by
raising him from the dead.
