Jesus Wept
Richard Quirk
None of us like talking about death. Often we can’t even bring ourselves to say the word ‘dead’ and instead use softer language like ‘passed away’. All of us have grieved over the loss of a loved one at some stage and the pain can often be unbearable. It is hard to see how life can ever be the same again.
For those of us with a deep faith in Christ it can be hard to comprehend that suffering and death happens when we know that God loves us so much. We know from today’s passage that Jesus weeps with us when we grieve. But there is hope. Jesus came to defeat death once and for all. He came to this Earth to die for us, so that we will have eternal life with him. No more crying, nor sadness, nor pain and no more death – all we have to do is believe in Jesus Christ.
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her
also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
“Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
John 11:33-36
