Prison Fellowship and Mothers' Day
Lise Martinez Gonzalez (Missions)
As we worship today and share Mothers’ Day we also remember those who cannot be with their mothers today.
For young adults in prison, maintaining family contact is vital for emotional stability, particularly for young offenders. The Prison Fellowship’s ‘Angel Tree Mother’s Day’ supports these young adults by helping them restore and maintain relationships with their mothers. It gives them the opportunity to have a gift sent on Mother’s Day with a personalised message, enabling them to express love, gratitude and, in some cases, to reconnect with their mums entirely. Each year, hundreds of gifts are sent, showing both the growing need and the impact of this work. For some, a Mother’s Day card becomes the first step towards forgiveness and renewed connection—and towards making meaningful changes that lead them away from crime.
Rooted in compassion and Christian values, Angel Tree Mother’s Day reflects God’s heart for reconciliation, reminding families and young people alike of the enduring power of a mother’s love and the hope of restored relationships.
The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him.
Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it.
Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive
again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.
