Behind the Scenes

Marilyn Appleby

andrew windowToday we hear a little about the Apostle Andrew. Our church, of course, is named after him. We read that Andrew was the first to recognise Jesus as the Messiah, and he rushes off to share this news with his brother Peter, about whom we know a great deal more.

Andrew was the disciple who found the boy with the five loaves and two fishes with which Jesus miraculously shared amongst 5000 people. (Reported in all four Gospels).

Although we hear little about Andrew, it’s likely that he shared what he had learned about Jesus with many others, going about his business, unseen and un-applauded.

This is like many people within our church fellowship who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help our church, and others in the community, yet we hear little of them. They do not shout it from the rooftops— they are simply giving of themselves, doing whatever it is that God has called them to do.

So we say ‘Thank-you’ to all the unsung heroes and heroines at St Andrew’s. May they be blessed as they continue to serve the Lord.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
not looking to your own interests but each of you
to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4
